Prashant Gupta / FX FX and Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter have prevailed in a lawsuit filed by an ex-Hell's Angel biker who claimed the idea for the hit drama series was stolen.our editor recommends'Glee,' 'Sons of Anarchy' Added to Amazon Prime Instant Video Streaming Service'Sons of Anarchy' Creator Kurt Sutter on Season 4's Bold Finale and Season 5 PlansFurious 'Sons of Anarchy' Creator Tells DirecTV Viewers 'You're Getting F---ed Over'; Reveals Banned Script Chuck Zito sued FX for $5 million in June 2010 claiming he had developed a show called Nomads (later The Wild Angels) and had agents at ICM set up a pitch meeting in 2004 with FX chief John Landgraf, during which Zito says he discussed ideas for a show about a motorcycle club. FX passed on the project but later developed Sutter's Sons, which ICM packaged and which recently concluded its 4th season as a big hit for the network. "FX was obligated to pay Zito the reasonable value of his ideas, hire him to work on the series and afford him screen credit as creator," the lawsuit alleged. "Defendants breached an implied-in-fact contract with defendant." VIDEO: 'Sons of Anarchy': Ron Perlman Says Season 4 Was a Challenge At the time, Sutter took to his twitter account to blast the lawsuit, saying: "HAVING THE F***ING IDEA IS NOT THE SHOW. STORY: 'Sons of Anarchy' Creator Kurt Sutter on Season 4's Bold Finale and Season 5 Plans Today a Los Angeles Superior Court judge agreed, ruling on summary judgment that Sons was independently created and Zito doesn't have a case. The judge relied on declarations submitted by Sutter, Landgraf and talent agent Matt Solo (now with WME), among others, showing Sutter's development process and the fact that Sons was pitched to several networks, including HBO and AMC, before arriving at FX, which bought the project in a bidding war. Jeremy Renner on 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol,' 'The Bourne Legacy,' and Who Else Might Play Steve McQueen
Jeremy Renner must be out of breath by now: Between filming action epics 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol,' 'The Bourne Legacy' and 'The Avengers,' he has been run ragged for your entertainment over the last 12 months. While fans will have to wait to see those last two films, 'Ghost Protocol' hits theaters on IMAX screens around the country this Friday (with a national rollout to follow next week), with Renner matching wits with star Tom Cruise. (Whom he is not taking over for, by the way.) The twice Oscar-nominated actor also has a Steve McQueen project in the works, in which he's slated to play the King of Cool, although there's still no script and he's prepared to hand it over to an even more famous actor, should McQueen's family decide they "hate his guts." Where were you when Tom Cruise was hanging precariously from that tower in Dubai? The first time I saw it, I was on the ground, just looking up, when he was rehearsing it. There were some days we had off because they were spending all day with helicopters getting shots, flying around the thing. The building's so tall that anywhere you were in the city, you could see it and there was this little speck swinging all around it. You would look and think, "Look at that guy!" I'd be walking around, forgetting about him and then shopping, getting a drink and then look up and go, "There he is, still going at it." Better him than I. God bless him. There has been talk that you're going to take over the franchise, so will this be you climbing tall buildings and hanging by a thread in the next movie? No. People are going to talk all they want. It's Tom's baby. He's the face of the franchise and will always be. If he wants to go make another one and they want to invite me, then I'd be happy. But I can't say whether I live or die or whether I'm good or bad. It's also why I love the character, loved this part. It's a blessing to be part of the franchise. But you'd like to come back for another go-round? I don't know, people have first got to see this one. It's got to be successful. They're not cheap to make. And then there has to be desire for Tom and Paramount to do another one. If they want to get a script together and throw my character in, then, hey: great. Do you have a contract for another one? Yeah. If they so choose to use that. Or they can tell me to piss off. You know what I mean? It's their call. Like any other franchise, you want to keep the possibilities open. What if people hate the character or the character doesn't work out? All that any of us could focus on was the task at hand. And it was a big task to overcome. But you are taking over the Bourne franchise? Yep. I'm the lead of 'Bourne Legacy.' Not taking over Bourne, to clarify. People get that misconstrued. Right, you're playing a totally new character, not Jason Bourne. Yeah, yeah. Matt Damon will always be Jason Bourne. Matt Damon isn't in this movie. Jason Bourne isn't in it, but it's still a Bourne movie. People ask me, "How does that work?" They don't get it. They just have to see the movie. They'll see the congruency and there's a new set of characters. Are any of the existing players coming back? Yeah, I think there might be an overlap of a few things. Will we see Joan Allen again? I can't speak to any of those things, because I couldn't be certain. That's a whole separate part of those movies. [IMDB lists Joan Allen and Scott Glenn among the cast, with Albert Finney "rumored" to return.] It's the same writer [Tony Gilroy] through all of them and our writer is also our director. It has the same action director that we have for second unit that was also on 'Mission: Impossible.' So it has that sort of continuity. And then how it's shot, the pace of it, the tone, is very similar. It's very documentary-style, just like all of them. It has that intimate feel. Complete opposite of 'Mission,' which is a big spectacle movie. It feels like a small city on set. Whereas with 'Bourne,' you feel like you're shooting an independent movie. It's very intimate, just a camera lurking in a room while a scene happens. So it feels very small, even though it is a big, big movie. It has great tempo and great action and great, great character stuff. You'll know it's a Bourne movie. It's just not with Jason Bourne. It's a new program, new set of spies, new set of obstacles. But same sort of everything else, I think. Did you learn Krav Maga, like Damon did? No, I had to learn a lot of other things. [Laughs]. But with our fight team that's actually bled over from 'Mission' to 'Hansel and Gretel' and even ''The Avengers' and 'Bourne.' It's pretty much the same guys, all 8711. It's a stunt team that has different disciplines as their expertise and so there's a big mishmash of whatever works best. Especially when it comes to [playing] an agent, it's not about doing things that are necessarily flashy and impressive, it's about taking someone down as fast as you can. And as realistically as you can. That's been the great challenge, to do it and make it look you're really making it happen. What's going on with your Steve McQueen project? It's getting some legs now at this point. With James Gray turning in his first draft here within the next few weeks. I'm really excited to read it. I think [McQueen] was a really interesting human being, just to get to know in a different way than most people know him. That's kind of why I wanted to tell the story that I want to tell. It's hard to do a life story about somebody and make it interesting, you know? But if anybody's going to do it right, I think James Gray is the guy to go to. So if it all seems to come together, it'll come together. Will it be a nontraditional approach to a biopic? I don't know what the hell's traditional and what isn't. I'm a terrible guy to ask that question. The one script I read was good, but it wasn't great. There hasn't been a Steve McQueen movie, so why have it just be good? It needs to be great. I don't want to bash anyone by any means, because it was a really good script. But it was just talking all the things -- and I didn't know a lot about Steve McQueen -- I already knew about. And I don't know anything about him. So what are you telling here? It was like a one-sided journalistic view or something. It wasn't very broad. It didn't allow audiences into this human being, so let's get to know him in another way. As I study him a little more, [I'm finding out] what an interesting dichotomy of a human being he was. And how stingy and cheap, but generous. He was a constant oxymoron of himself. Even if he was fictitious, I'd think, "What an interesting character." So yeah, I would love to explore these inner workings of the King of Cool. Do you have his family's blessing? Yeah, I think James has been working with Barbara [McQueen's third wife] on it. And they approve of you? I haven't gotten that far. But they don't hate you? I haven't heard that either! If they tell me, "Hell no, we hate your guts," maybe we'll get Daniel Craig to get in there. OWN Shifting Concentrate on Its African-American Audiences
The brand new the new sony Pictures I'm pleased to produce the eighth episode of "Feinberg & Pals," a podcast in regards to the honours race that airs round the Race every week.our editor recommendsFEINBERG & Pals, Air. 7: Scott and Showbiz411's Roger Friedman on Honours RaceFEINBERG & Pals, Air. 6: Scott & Honours Daily's Sasha Stone on Honours Race (Audio)FEINBERG & Pals, Air. 5: Scott & The Film Experience's Nat Rogers round the Honours Race (Audio)FEINBERG & Pals, Air. 4: Scott & Gold Derby's Tom O'Neil round the Honours Race (Audio) Each episode features a discussion between me together with another guest -- a film blogger, critic or journalist of 1 other variation -- about 10 different honours-related subjects (which we list inside the text connected the audio to actually realize just what you're signing up for) and runs for roughly 30 to 40 minutes (to make sure that if an individual subject is not of particular interest for you it'll just be about three or four minutes before we're to the next, which hopefully will probably be). I used to be delighted that my friend Melissa Silverstein, who runs your site As well as Hollywood (which examines Hollywood as well as the honours race using the prism of feminism), made the decision to become listed on me with this particular episode. I really loved our chat, throughout which we handled the following 10 questions... 1. The Woman while using Dragon Tattoo and incredibly Noisy and very Close -- the ultimate two honours hopefuls to screen -- are really in the bag. Does it look like either appear to become game-changers inside the best picture Oscar race? 2. This year's best actress race features portrayals of numerous female figures, within the first lady duly-selected to steer a western energy (Meryl Streep inside the Iron Lady) with a mix-dresser (Glenn Close to the coast Albert Nobbs) with a bisexual hacker (Rooney Mara inside the Girl while using Dragon Tattoo) with a self-introduced "bitch" (Charlize Theron in Youthful Adult). What can women -- especially feminists -- think about this area? 3. As THR reported this year's week, it appears as if The Help faces a continuing battle to win the most effective picture Oscar, mainly because of the fact the Academy's gender breakdown is belived being roughly 2-to-1 male. Does it overcome that? 4. Virtually everyone values the Artist and War Equine are two locks for top picture nominations, which either may even win. Why, though, are a few beginning to strenuously disparage the two films to become too lightweight and too schmaltzy, correspondingly? 5. It has been a free account of two films let's focus on Focus Features: Mess Tailor Soldier Spy, the studio has extended regarded as as becasue it is most effective best picture prospect, was shut through the early honours-meting out groups, but Beginners, therefore it had extended regarded as as just like a contender mainly for top supporting actor (Christopher Plummer) and greatest original script (Mike Mills), started arriving everywhere. Should we read to the results? 6. The questionable NC-17 film Shame began its platform release the other day making a lot of money from a couple of theaters. Will Academy people be similarly inclined to check out a film about sex addiction which has moments of full-frontal males and ladies nudity and sex functions? 7. You will discover several films in this particular year's honours race that have been directed having a lady, like the Iron Lady (Phyllida Lloyd), Pariah (Dee Rees), We must Discuss Kevin (Lynne Ramsey), as well as the Whistleblower (Larysa Kondracki). But, couple of years after Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) increased being the initial lady to win the most effective director Oscar, have things really become any simpler for girls company company directors? 8. As THR noted on Wednesday, Jessica Chastain has given strong supporting personas in believe it or not than five 2011 honours competitors, as both versions continues to be pressed having a different studio -- Fox Searchlight's The Tree of Existence (5/27), Disney's The Help (8/10), Focus Features' Your Financial Troubles (8/22), The brand new the new sony Pictures Classics' Take Shelter (9/30), as well as the Weinstein Company's Coriolanus (12/2). Will getting lots of films in contention prevent her from garnering enough votes to acquire nominated for just one, or could she still accomplish a jerk? 9. You will discover certain technological references in David Fincher's The Woman while using Dragon Tattoo that appear prone to discuss the heads of older Academy voters, similar to several in Fincher's previous film, The Social Media. Might this hurt the film's best picture Oscar prospects? 10. Now, THR revealed its 20th annual "Women in Entertainment" list of the extremely effective women inside the entertainment industry. What should we type of who did -- in addition to who did not -- increase the risk for list? Give a listen... Q&A: Steven Spielberg
SpielbergDirecting "keeps me on my small toes," states Steven Spielberg. With two films, "The Adventures of Tintin" and "War Equine," bowing this month along with a third, "Lincoln subsequently," presently shooting, the helmer is unquestionably hopping. Because he gets near completion around the latter, Spielberg required a breather to go over with Variety's Christy Grosz the detailed fight moments of "War Equine" and the first utilization of three dimensional, on "Tintin":The Second World War has been utilized extensively in film, but The First World War a smaller amount. Was this setting particularly interesting for you? Spielberg: The First World War was the final hurrah for that equine (in) warfare. It had been a period when the technological revolution, mainly within the implementation of recent technologies to kill more effectively and much more cruelly, were supplanting the effectiveness from the equine, which in fact had introduced terror in to the hearts of standing armies for hundreds of years. And after The First World War, which was over and also the equine returned to some more bucolic and sane life-style. Have you discover anything inside your research that you simply did not know before? I did not know the number of countless horses have been destroyed. Not only through the wounds of war but by neglect and disease and exposure and lack of nutrition. I simply was unaware of that until I acquired active in the project due to the Michael Morpurgo book and also the play (each of which offered because the foundation for the "War Equine" script). The fight sequences target the clash of old-style weaponry and new technology. Maybe it was hard to create these violent fight moments and retain a PG-13 rating? Always, because this is exactly why there's almost no bloodstream whatsoever in "War Equine." The battles are intense, but from a film that's over two hrs, whenever you really add up there's no more than ten minutes of combat. Anything else is all about connections between figures -- due to Joey and what Joey gives everyone's existence he touches. Therefore it is really much more of a tale about courage and connections and a lesser story about combat. The film's look resembles a legendary from cinema history. Did embark with d.p. Janusz Kaminski to provide the film that classic look? It's difficult to provide a movie a vintage look -- it isn't making that decision and merely doing the work. I needed to, to begin with, work out how large a job the land would play, our planet would play within this. After I made the decision very in early stages the land would be almost as essential as the figures and Joey, that transformed the paradigm of my type of approaching "War Equine" since the sky and also the land meant everything in my experience. Both figures require the land to outlive, simply to scratch out a full time income underneath the boot heel of the intolerant landlord. And they range from that type of hands-to-mouth lifestyle, right to another type of blasted land, of no-man's land around the Somme in France. After I recognized the land would be considered a character, everything transformed. You might also need the first three dimensional animated feature, "The Adventures of Tintin." Do you consider three dimensional is really a new horizon for filmmakers? I would like three dimensional for use when it is appropriate so when the filmmaker includes a vision because of its use, not just in be utilized for an advertising and marketing tool. I do not think every movie ought to be in three dimensional. I disagree with my co-workers who think that every film ought to be in three dimensional. It's another tool in an exceedingly large tool chest. I believe three dimensional ought to be used when there's something to become accomplished from this, not just in have the ability to slam the three dimensional brand on the movie ad. Do you know me anything concerning the status of "Jurassic Park IV" or "Indiana Johnson V"? (Chuckles) If I say to you that, we'll have little else to discuss next time, can we? Lionsgate Vice Chair Talks Charlie Sheen Show, Netflix, Summit Deal, 'Hunger Games'
Patty Jenkins Petty Jenkins is no longer directing Thor 2. The filmmaker, best known for directing the Charlize Theron movie Monster and AMC's pilot for The Killing, was to have been the first female director of a Marvel Studios movie. Alas, "creative differences" are being blamed. "I havehada great time working at Marvel," Jenkins toldThe Hollywood Reporterin an exclusive statement."We parted on very good terms, and I look forward to working with them again." The move is sudden since as late as Monday afternoon Jenkins was actively working on the movie. The filmmaker participated in an interview and photo shoot withTHRon Dec. 2, during which she discussed her involvement in the project and praised Marvel. "I have a long love of superhero films and I'd been saying over and over again to my agents at CAA that I'd like to do one," Jenkins told THR for a magazine feature on female directors that hits newsstands on Dec. 8. "That's the real revolution."The Marvel guys are so brave in terms of who they choose overall, and I don't think they had any pause about me being a woman." Jenkins told THR she had stayed away from features from the past several years because of her young son but eagerly accepted the Thor 2 job. "I met with all the actors and to my surprise, here we are," she said. Marvel is said to want to work with Jenkins again in some capacity. The Closer Creator James Duff Previews the Show's "Jolly" 100th Episode
Kyra Sedgwick, Frances Sternhagen and Craig Corbin Inside our season-extended study of affection, The Closer might be remiss whether it didn't pause to consider the fuzziest of human passions: a fondness for that own golden past.Next to nothing tickles warm, childhood recollections like the holidays. Gifts, accessories, friendly occasions, family feasting and favorite tunes blend to fresh fresh paint a glowing patina over good recollections. Sadly, the American model of nostalgia edges on amnesia, and possessing our youthful add-ons oftentimes requires overlooking numerous problematic details, roughly our wise civilian tech, Buzz Watson, discovers when dragging his youthful sister, Casey, around the annual trip to a close Christmas fair.North Of Manchester Pole Village - filled with evergreen trees and shiny ornaments - children in line to find out Santa and walking reindeer - might be a as being a Rorschach test with this group of fighting siblings and siblings. To Buzz, it's as being a present waiting being opened up up round the morning of December 25th to his little sister, Casey, it's a tacky disadvantage game with fake snow designed to coax parents from hard-acquired cash once they perpetuate childish myths about St. Nick. Both are wrong. North Of Manchester Pole Village very quickly becomes a criminal offense scene featuring (among other activities) a fatally problematic zip line, drug dealing elves and several inadequate excuses for Santa Claus, among whom is carried out with easy charm by Fred Willard, famous for his star turns in movies like Waiting for Guffman, A Mighty Wind and greatest in Show. In "There is a To Stay Jolly," Mr. Willard helps The Closer celebrate its 100th episode. We considered marking the marriage by doing something dark and mysterious, but surveying the comfort within our December episodes, and taking into consideration the pessimistic mood of the united states, we felt being an try to cheer people up wouldn't be entirely amiss. And, besides killing off Santa Claus, I am in a position to personally attest the males of Major Crimes certainly felt better after meeting Buzz's sister, the attractive and amiable Christine Wood (with whom I share mothering sunday). Casey's physical charms prove this kind of distraction that both Buzz and Chief Manley certainly are a little round the warpath in this particular episode, which features the return of Mark Pellegrino as Brenda's determined attorney, Gavin Q. Baker.I'd rather not quit all things in Santa's sleigh. However when you are among people people who loves an excellent elf fight, and miracles from time to time why The Dance in the Sugar Plum Fairy isn't familiar with score more television shows, tonight's episode is just to suit your needs. Make certain to remain around for your atmosphere within the finish. And special due to this week's guest stars for playing out our little holiday extravaganza while using good spirits of Christmases past.Until inside a couple of days... - James Duff

Alice Eve Joins 'Star Trek 2,' Details Emerge On Del Toro Character
A new report from Variety claims that J.J. Abrams has added Alice Eve to the lineup for "Star Trek 2." According to the article, Eve will play a character new to the "Star Trek" cannon, instead one fans are familiar with from either the original series or the films. Eve reportedly beat out Teresa Palmer and Hayley Atwell to join the sci-fi sequel, which is scheduled to begin shooting early next year. While Eve's deal has yet to be officially inked, the jury is still out on whether Benicio del Toro will join the cast as the villain. Word came out earlier this month that Abrams wanted del Toro to take on the role, but details on the character have remained entirely mysterious. Now, the Variety report offers the first potential word on the character del Toro could eventually play. The article cites someone close to production, who claims that the villain would be someone familiar to longtime fans of the series. This only fuels early speculation that the villain would either be Kahn from the original film's sequel or a Klingon. The other new detail to emerge from Variety was a brief mention of a third character to be cast that an insider describes as "another villain, someone who's older and in more of a supporting character to del Toro." The details, while scant, open up a world of possible speculation. So much of the Abrams-typical secrecy has surrounded this project from every angle, but with production finally beginning to ramp up, the number of secrets and how fiercely they're protected will inevitably skyrocket. Who would you like to see Alice Eve play in "Star Trek 2"? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

The Descendants' Judy Greer on her behalf Memorable First Ending up in George Clooney and 2 . 5 Males
There's always been something innately memorable about actress Judy Greer. The strangely enough beautiful actress with razor-sharp timing, a scene-stealer in from What Women Wish to Arrested Development, carries a fundamental melancholy behind her eyes that gives the best figures much deeper layers and also the outrageous ones a much better feeling of unpredictability, whether in comedies or, progressively, in dramatic fare. So perhaps she was created to stay in an Alexander Payne movie such as the Descendants, which flits backwards and forwards across the painful edge between tragedy and humor with techniques that feel completely, and achingly, human. The Descendants (modified by Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash from Kaui Hart Hemmings novel of the identical title) stars George Clooney as Matt King, an attorney and father of two in Hawaii caught inside a crisis when he finds out his comatose wife’s infidelity. Comedy and tears ensue and intertwine in classic Payne style as King finds out the bittersweetness of regret, understanding and forgiveness, assisted by co-star Judy Greer’s turn as Julie Speer, the unwitting 4th corner within this love quadrangle. Movieline spoken with Greer concerning the Descendants, her memorable first meeting — and love scene — with co-star Clooney for 1999’s Three Nobleman, her favorite theater and moviegoing habits, and why, after guest-starring on Season 4 of 2 . 5 Males, she came back towards the series within the wake of Charlie Sheen’s departure. It’s fun to help you within the Descendants, since you share much of your moments with George Clooney — That’s fun for me personally too, incidentally! Also it calls in your thoughts the prior time you and also he shared a scene, in Three Nobleman. I understand! It had been strange! It had been fun to determine him again and discuss that and just how youthful I had been at that time after i shot that scene. It had been maybe 12 years back? It’s an unforgettable scene. Also it’s the very first time the thing is his character, or are brought to him. It’s type of amazing — he’s making love with a few girl! We spoken about how exactly I acquired the part and the very first time I met him. I had been like, I couldn’t believe I met you and also they literally stated, ‘You’ve got the part — you now’ve reached come rehearse this scene with George Clooney,’ where these were already practicing with Nora Dunn and Mykelti Williamson. These were like, ‘Here he's — now use the restroom and everyone are pretending to have sexual intercourse plus they barge in you, action!’ And That I’m like, ‘Wait, I acquired the part? And That I use with George Clooney who I’ve looked at each week on E.R.??’ I had been losing it. We chuckled about this. You’re mostly noted for comedy had you been searching for anything specific once the role within the Descendants fell across your lap? I first got it from my agent, who sent me the script and stated that they setup this audition for me personally. Clearly i was all really looking forward to it. Perhaps a couple of years before I'd pointed out it may be fun to try and search for more dramatic roles… some more compact roles either in good-sized movies or independent movies, so I possibly could attempt to exercise that muscle a bit. I’m not to imply that’s why The Descendants came my way it could came my way anyway. But which was something which I had been positively searching to locate. Your role can be quite effective, thinking about that people aren’t brought to you until well in to the film. However it’s this type of potent part she plays this type of pivotal role within the resolution of Matt King’s mission for closure. How can you take a look at a job such as this and also the function it serves? Well, I didn’t really consider its function within the movie after i was shooting it. I simply think it is so awesome it is at there, it had been this type of great role which was so well crafted and well-rounded, as well as in such a tiny bit of moments. That’s so difficult to do! You may be number 1 around the call sheet inside a movie and never contribute that’s that well-written, you realize? But having seen the film cut together and everything I see that certain of my functions within the movie appears to become to obtain George to protect his wife, and also to stick up on her, and also to ultimately leave behind her. For the amount of time that we understand her, she appears such as the best individual around. Everybody else is hiding something, or angry, or battling some way. But even her story is tinged with both comedy and sadness. If this finally arrives of her, it’s amusing and heartbreaking at the same time. I believe that’s what's so amazing about Alexander’s movies they discover the perfect tone. He’s brilliant at creating both beautiful, poignant moments that finish in laughter, that may begin in tears and finish in laughter or begin in laughter and finish with tears. And that he never really informs his audience things to consider anything. He simply presents a choice of the situation. He’s not heavy handed together with his music options in movies, he’s not heavy handed considering the variety of words that emerge from a personality’s mouth. Rather than showing a scene in which the young girl, Scottie, states goodbye to her mother, he shows her walking in to the room together with her older sister. And guess what happens’s going to take place. You're able to use fantasy, and maybe even have a memory out of your own existence and set it for the reason that place whether it’s something you taken care of immediately or perhaps an experience that’s really happened for you. But he provides you with the liberty to apply your brain and that i love that. I really like he makes me area of the storytelling due to what he doesn’t show. You’re right. Which scene’s lovely since the seem just fades the family’s ultimate conversations remain private, which amplifies the theme of releasing of the family members inside a deeply personal way. I understand. It’s about forgiveness also it’s about releasing. I believe that’s an effective way of putting it. It’s additionally a transitional phase story for any boy who is actually half a century old. Rather than being that Holden Caulfield character just from prep school, we’re obtaining a guy who’s resided 1 / 2 of his existence and needs to begin again.

One never wants to bet against a project that stars Meryl Streep, but it has taken an unsettlingly long time for Phyllida Lloyd's biopic of Margaret Thatcher to get finished, trailered, and screened. BEST DIRECTOR Frontrunners Alexander Payne (The Descendants) Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) Steven Spielberg (War Horse) Tate Taylor (The Help) Major Threats Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) David Fincher (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Bennett Miller (Moneyball) Clint Eastwood (J. Edgar) George Clooney (The Ides of March) Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) Martin Scorsese (Hugo) Possibilities Tomas Alfredson (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) NEW Steve McQueen (Shame) Phyllida Lloyd (The Iron Lady) Jason Reitman (Young Adult) Roman Polanski (Carnage) Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) Steven Spielberg (The Adventures of Tintin) Cameron Crowe (We Bought a Zoo) PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes of THR's Actress Roundtable 2011 He is not well known among his peers -- indeed, this was his feature directorial debut -- but strong best picture contenders like The Help almost always carry along their director on their coattails, and his film certainly fits that description. Tintin's North American premiere at AFI Fest confirmed that it is a film with huge box-office potential -- and that its helmer's chances for a seventh best director nod rest solely with War Horse. BEST ACTOR Frontrunners Jean Dujardin (The Artist) George Clooney (The Descendants) Brad Pitt (Moneyball) Leonardo DiCaprio (J. Edgar) Michael Fassbender (Shame) Major Threats Michael Shannon (Take Shelter) Gary Oldman (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) Woody Harrelson (Rampart) Ryan Gosling (The Ides of March) Ryan Gosling (Drive) Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50) Ralph Fiennes (Coriolanus) Possibilities Paul Giamatti (Win Win) Daniel Craig (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris) Demian Bichir (A Better Life) Thomas Horn (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) Zachary Quinto (Margin Call) NEW Matt Damon (We Bought a Zoo) True, he still can't speak much English, but that hasn't kept him from attending virtually every possible gladhanding opportunity, just like Roberto Benigni and Marion Cotillard in years past, and things worked out quite nicely for them. I'm hearing that the star of War Horse -- which will begin screening for press at the end of this month -- is not its leading man (who apparently does a perfectly fine job with limited screen time), but rather its title character. BEST ACTRESS Frontrunners Viola Davis (The Help) Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs) Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Major Threats Keira Knightley (A Dangerous Method) Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) Charlize Theron (Young Adult) Michelle Yeoh (The Lady) Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) Possibilities Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre) Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia) Adepero Oduye (Pariah) Ellen Barkin (Another Happy Day) Rachel Weisz (The Whistleblower) Vera Farmiga (Higher Ground) Nobody has been more a trouper on the awards trail this year than the five-time nominee, who has hobknobbed around the world on behalf of her film (she's picked up no fewer than three career achievement awards at this point), and who was a hit at Saturday's Governors Awards. Unfortunately, Cannes' best actress winner has been unable to get out from under the shadow of her director Lars von Trier's Nazi-sympathizing comments, which come up in conversation every time her film or performance does. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Frontrunners Christopher Plummer (Beginners) Albert Brooks (Drive) Stanley Tucci (Margin Call) NEW Jeremy Irons (Margin Call) NEW Kevin Spacey (Margin Call) NEW Major Threats Max von Sydow (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Armie Hammer (J. Edgar) Kenneth Branagh (My Week with Marilyn) Tom Hanks (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) John Hawkes (Martha Marcy May Marlene) Jonah Hill (Moneyball) Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) Nick Nolte (Warrior) Possibilities Andy Serkis (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) Christoph Waltz (Carnage) John C. Reilly (Carnage) Jim Broadbent (The Iron Lady) Brad Pitt (The Tree of Life) George Clooney (The Ides of March) Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method) The last few years have proven that actors are rewarded in the supporting actor category for being bad -- or at least playing bad boys, like Brooks's homocidal psychopath. See: Javier Bardem, Heath Ledger, Christoph Waltz, and Christian Bale. There are few better actors than Mortensen, but this intellectually-demanding film and his brief but nuanced performance in it both seem to have gotten lost in the shuffle. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Frontrunners Octavia Spencer (The Help) Berenice Bejo (The Artist) Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) Jessica Chastain (The Help) Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) Major Threats Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus) Sandra Bullock (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) Carey Mulligan (Shame) Evan Rachel Wood (The Ides of March) Judy Greer (The Descendants) Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life) Possibilities Jodie Foster (Carnage) Kate Winslet (Carnage) Marion Cotillard (Midnight in Paris) Emily Watson (War Horse) Judi Dench (J. Edgar) Scarlett Johansson (We Bought a Zoo) True, the Emmy winner's performance is not of the sort that usually registers with the Academy -- but the same was true of Robert Downey Jr.'s in Tropic Thunder, and he made the cut. Likability matters, too, and McCarthy, like Downey, oozes it. The Dame has appeared this year in three noteworthy films -- Jane Eyre, My Week with Marilyn, and J. Edgar -- which is pretty amazing for a 76-year-old. Unfortunately, none of her parts have had quite enough meat on the bones to merit a nomination. BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Frontrunners Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash (The Descendants) Tate Taylor (The Help) Richard Curtis, Lee Hall (War Horse) Eric Roth (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close) Steven Zaillian (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) Major Threats Stan Chervin, Aaron Sorkin, Steven Zaillian (Moneyball) George Clooney, Grant Heslov (The Ides of March) Bridget O'Connor, Peter Straughan (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) John Logan (Hugo) Pedro Almodovar (The Skin I Live In) Hossein Amini (Drive) Possibilities Roman Polanski (Carnage) Christopher Hampton (A Dangerous Method) Cameron Crowe, Aline Brosh McKenna (We Bought a Zoo) James Ellroy, Oren Moverman (Rampart) John Logan (Coriolanus) There probably isn't any category in which The Descendants is more likely to be recognized than this one -- Payne, who is about as revered a screenwriter as there is, was nominated in it twice before, winning for Sideways (2004). I saw this film on the opening night of the NY Film Festival and liked it quite a lot, but the general consensus seems to be that it pales in comparison to God of Carnage, the Tony winning stage play that inspired it. BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Frontrunners Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris) Dustin Lance Black (J. Edgar) J.C. Chandor (Margin Call) NEW Mike Mills (Beginners) Major Threats Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy Mae Marlene) Abi Morgan, Steve McQueen (Shame) Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life) Diablo Cody (Young Adult) Tom McCarthy, Joe Tiboni (Win Win) James Ward Byrkit, John Logan, Gore Verbinski (Rango) Drake Doremus, Ben York Jones (Like Crazy) Possibilities Annie Mumolo, Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) Will Reiser (50/50) Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) J.J. Abrams (Super 8) Dee Rees (Pariah) His poignant script is based largely on his own experiences -- for instance, his own elderly father, like the character played by Plummer in the film, came out of the closet to him shortly before dying of cancer -- a talking point that plays very well in Q&As and interviews. Very few foreign language films have managed to score an Oscar nod outside of the foreign language category, and this worthy winner of the Berlin Film Festival seems unlikely to buck that trend. BEST ANIMATED FILM (FEATURE) Frontrunners Rango (Paramount, 3/4, PG, trailer) The Adventures of Tintin (Paramount, 12/21, PG, trailer) Cars 2 (Disney, 6/24, G, trailer) Happy Feet 2 (Warner Brothers, 11/18, PG, trailer) Puss in Boots (DreamWorks, 11/4, PG, trailer) Major Threats Arthur Christmas (Sony, 11/23, PG, trailer) Kung Fu Panda 2 (DreamWorks, 5/26, PG, trailer) Rio (20th Century Fox, 4/15, G, trailer) Possibilities Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked (20th Century Fox, 12/11, TBA, trailer) Winnie the Pooh (Disney, 7/15, G, trailer) The Smurfs (Sony, 7/29, PG, trailer) The Lion of Judah (Animated Family Films, 6/3, TBA, trailer) BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM (FEATURE) Frontrunners The Interrupters (The Cinema Guild, 7/29, TBA, trailer) Project Nim (Roadside Attractions, 7/8, PG-13, trailer) Senna (Producers Distribution Agency, 8/12, PG-13, trailer) Buck (IFC Films, 6/17, PG, trailer) Into the Abyss (Sundance Selects, 11/11, TBA, TBA) Major Threats If a Tree Falls (Oscilloscope, 6/22, TBA, trailer) Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey (Submarine Deluxe, TBA, trailer) Bill Cunningham NY (Zeitgeist Films, 3/16, TBA, trailer) The Island President (Samuel Goldwyn Films, 11/8, TBA, TBA) Better This World (Bullfrog Films, 8/26, TBA, trailer) Koran by Heart (HBO Documentary Films, TBA, TBA, trailer) Tabloid (Sundance Selects, 7/15, R, trailer) Page One: Inside the NY Times (Magnolia, 6/24, TBA, trailer) We Were Here (Red Flag Releasing, 9/?, TBA, trailer) Hell and Back Again (Docurama Films, 10/5, TBA, trailer) Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (HBO Documentary Films, TBA, TBA, trailer) Possibilities The Rescuers (Menemsha Films, TBA, TBA, trailer) The Bully Project (The Weinstein Company, TBA, TBA, trailer) Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel (Anchor Bay Films, 10/16, TBA, trailer) Magic Trip (Magnolia, 8/5, TBA, trailer) The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 (Sundance Selects, 9/9, TBA, trailer) Hot Coffee (HBO Documentaries, 6/27, TBA, trailer) Pearl Jam Twenty (Abramorama, 9/20, R, trailer) Bobby Fischer Against the World (HBO Documentary Films, TBA, TBA, TBA) The Whale (Paladin, TBA, TBA, TBA) Revenge of the Electric Car (Westmidwest Productions, TBA, TBA, trailer) The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (Sony Pictures Classics, 4/22, PG-13, trailer) Still Seeking Domestic Distribution Bombay Beach The Carrier Footnote Semper Fi: Always Faithful (trailer) BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM Frontrunners A Separation (Iran) Where Do We Go Now? Red Granite Pictures: Duo combine investment savvy with creative juice
Joey McFarland & Riza AzizRed Granite Pictures chairman/CEO Riza Aziz and vice chairman Joey McFarland are off to a rock-solid start, just a year after they launched the shingle in September 2010. Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions nabbed the Red Granite's recent Toronto fest debut "Friends With Kids," a $10 million ensemble comedy featuring Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig. It follows their revival of the aborted $75 million biopic "The Wolf of Wall Street," with friend Leonardo DiCaprio again attached to star and produce alongside Emjag Prods. It's a fitting project for the two finance vets, who formed the banner after being approached to fund several projects. "We're investor-savvy and know how to make movies the right way," Aziz says. "I think that's what made (DiCaprio) believe in us."The somewhat unlikely pair (recent London transplant and HSBC investment banker Aziz hails from Malaysia, private equity vet McFarland from Kentucky) recruited Nu Image's Danny Dimbort and Christian Mercuri to launch an international sales arm earlier this year, and Millennium's Joe Gatta to serve as the shingle's production prexy.Despite their background, they say they aren't just moneymen, giving creative input other films."We're not (going to be) pigeonholed into one genre or budget range," says McFarland, who expects to announce an ambitious slate of films in Berlin. "We want to make commercial, mainstream, high-pedigree films that read well on the page." -- Gregg Goldstein10 PRODUCERS TO WATCH 2011Jason Michael Berman | Borderline Films | Tyler Davidson & Sophia Lin | James Gay-Rees | Lawrence Inglee | Red Granite Pictures | Laura Rister | Jonathan Schwartz | Diarmid Scrimshaw | Kevin Walsh Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
Borderline Films: Trio maps out distinctive route
Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin and Josh MondDon't tell Borderline Films producers Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin and Josh Mond that you have a divide between commercial and arthouse fare."The notion that people a few things are believed separate is frustrating," Durkin states. "I really don't think developing a film getting a studio or developing a film on our own matters as extended as everyone is on one page. There's a middle ground."The Three principals named their Brooklyn-based feature, commercial and musicvideo production outfit Borderline becoming an homage with this conviction. They're also adamant about being a collective. While one directs, another two produce, and rotate accordingly.Their latest project, "Martha Marcy May Marlene," which Durkin written and directed, has gotten the kind of buzz that films -- of indie or studio origin -- crave.Among Sundance's finest success tales, "Martha," created for a modest $600,000, quickly agreed to Fox Searchlight for reported $1.6 000 0000 within the month of the month of january. The shingle has furthermore just signed a couple-year, first-look deal with Fox Searchlight."This may appear as an abrupt (success story), but it is been eight years of taking little steps," Durkin states.People little steps began when the trio were NYU film students."Lots of our first conversations were about creating a production company," Mond states. "I had been very business oriented immediately. It absolutely was never a conscious thought -- we produce our personal work which could it be.InchIn spite of their student status, in 2004 the trio tried to mount a component referred to as "Laid," a greater-school laffer starring Jonah Hill within the first feature role. Ultimately, financing fell through."By using their process we learned that which you could,In . Campos states. "The fact this didn't exercise only made that bond a lot more effective."The Three didn't waste finding their next project. "Purchase It Now" -- a short created for $1,000 written and directed by Campos and shot by Durkin -- won the most effective Cinefondation prize within the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. three years later, Campos' feature "Afterschool" (Durkin and Mond produced) first demonstrated in Not Sure Regard at Cannes.Using the wealth of "Martha," Borderline is much more busy than in the past. The Three producers are developing scripts and so are in publish-production on Campos' "Simon Killer," starring Brady Corbet just like a guy who moves to Paris carrying out a breakup and contains an affair getting a prostitute.10 PRODUCERS To Check Out 2011Jason Michael Berman Borderline Films Tyler Davidson & Sophia Lin James Gay-Rees Lawrence Inglee Red-colored-colored Granite Pictures Laura Rister Jonathan Schwartz Diarmid Scrimshaw Kevin Walsh Contact Addie Morfoot at news@variety.com

Auteur Ex Smackdown: Will Madonna or Guy Ritchie Have the Better-Received Fall Film?
This coming winter will bring us two major showdowns: Glenn vs. Meryl in the Best Actress race, and now ferocious exes Madonna and Guy Ritchie are officially duelists: Her W.E. debuts Dec. 9, and his Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows follows up on Dec. 16. Place your bets now: Which of these dubious, aggressively modern “old-fashioned” films will critics and audiences enjoy/tolerate more? First, here’s Madonna’s W.E., an unofficial adaptation of the esteemed children’s book The English Roses (if you ask me), in all its watercolored, scone-nibbling bliss: And as we just posted, here’s Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows — or as I call it, The Ham of the Baskervilles. I can’t believe I’m doing this to my sweet panther sorceress Madonna, but I think Sherlock’s Meta-score will top hers. Critics will be willing and primed to accept the nonsense whizzbang of Sherlock’s adventures, but there’s no prefacing Madonna’s waterlogged pretension. Every character in W.E. looks more static than the last, and I can’t say Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law lack personality. Ugh, why! Why does Madonna’s movie have to be so bad? Why! I thought I’d seen the worst of it in I Am Because We Are, but no, now accents, crinkly royal smiles, and that stupid fucking monogram have to come into play. I’ve worked too hard for Madonna to blow this. I tolerated American Life for this queen. I think I even called Jesus Luz “potentially all right” once. Is anyone else even remotely upset by the outlook of this bomb? It’s the unsightly hydrangea of the season, and now Arthur Conan Doyle’s Adderall-addicted, gunpowder-fed step-grandchildren are better than it. This? This is true blue sads. Netflix Stock Increases 7% Early Monday After Company Ditches Qwikster Plan
NY - Shares of Netflix rose at the begining of Monday buying and selling after the organization stated it might ditch its intend to separate its DVD-by-mail from the streaming service by creating Qwikster.com for DVD rental fees.our editor recommendsGoogle, Dish Made Greatest Hulu Bids in First Round (Report)Hulu Bids Likely to Range From $500 Million and $2 Billion PHOTOS: Netflix's 10 Most Leased Movies ever By 9:50am ET, Netflix's stock was up 6.8% at $125.13, passing on a market price of $6.57 billion. A couple of minutes earlier, it had been up a little more than 7 percent. Which was up in the stock's late September 52-week low of $107.63, but well below a This summer a lot of $304.79. Lazard Capital Marketplaces analyst Barton Crockett known as this news "the ideal choice by Netflix," maintaining his "neutral" rating around the stock. STORY: Netflix Yanks Intend to Separate DVD-By-Mail From Streaming Service Janney Montgomery Scott analyst Tony Wible stated this news confirmed that "these men are desperate and they'll attempt to accelerate the positives to reverse recent momentum and rebuild optimism." As the latest decision is "most likely a great move for customers" made to stem customer deficits, he stated he was "unsure the injury they triggered could be corrected." PHOTOS: Movie Report Card: 10 Greatest Flops of 2011 (To Date) Prior to the reversal from Netflix, together with a mea culpa from Boss Reed Hastings inside a blog publish, Wible had on early Monday upgraded his opinion on Netflix's stock from "sell" to "neutral," while keeping his fair value estimate of $102 per share. "We feel there's a far more balanced risk/reward until a brand new baseline of sub metrics is made round the third-quarter results," he contended. "Netflix is motivated to rebuild investor confidence around the approaching earnings and could utilize it to speak up potential positive causes, worldwide prospects and/or proper options." PHOTOS: Hollywood's Greatest Blunders Other Wall Street experts also stated Monday's reversal was created to boost customer and investor confidence in Netflix. BMO Capital Marketplaces analyst Edward Williams stated that Monday's news implies that Netflix is "adhering using what works." But he contended the stock could remain volatile before the customer impact of management's recent moves becomes clearer. He maintained his "market perform" rating around the stock. Wedbush Investments analyst Michael Pachter known as Netflix's back-paddling "coming back to sanity" adding the intend to separate the streaming and DVD rental companies "made no enterprise sense whatsoever, unless of course to put the organization for any purchase," particularly a purchase from the streaming business to Amazon . com.com. "The reversal informs me that Amazon . com isn't purchasing Netflix's streaming business and informs me that Reed's madness was temporary," Pachter stated. "If Netflix will remain independent, the split-up made no sense whatsoever, and also the backtracking was essential to restore and repair customer relations."
