Auteur Ex Smackdown: Will Madonna or Guy Ritchie Have the Better-Received Fall Film?

This coming winter will bring us two major showdowns: Glenn vs. Meryl in the Best Actress race, and now ferocious exes Madonna and Guy Ritchie are officially duelists: Her W.E. debuts Dec. 9, and his Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows follows up on Dec. 16. Place your bets now: Which of these dubious, aggressively modern “old-fashioned” films will critics and audiences enjoy/tolerate more? First, here’s Madonna’s W.E., an unofficial adaptation of the esteemed children’s book The English Roses (if you ask me), in all its watercolored, scone-nibbling bliss: And as we just posted, here’s Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows — or as I call it, The Ham of the Baskervilles. I can’t believe I’m doing this to my sweet panther sorceress Madonna, but I think Sherlock’s Meta-score will top hers. Critics will be willing and primed to accept the nonsense whizzbang of Sherlock’s adventures, but there’s no prefacing Madonna’s waterlogged pretension. Every character in W.E. looks more static than the last, and I can’t say Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law lack personality. Ugh, why! Why does Madonna’s movie have to be so bad? Why! I thought I’d seen the worst of it in I Am Because We Are, but no, now accents, crinkly royal smiles, and that stupid fucking monogram have to come into play. I’ve worked too hard for Madonna to blow this. I tolerated American Life for this queen. I think I even called Jesus Luz “potentially all right” once. Is anyone else even remotely upset by the outlook of this bomb? It’s the unsightly hydrangea of the season, and now Arthur Conan Doyle’s Adderall-addicted, gunpowder-fed step-grandchildren are better than it. This? This is true blue sads. Netflix Stock Increases 7% Early Monday After Company Ditches Qwikster Plan

NY - Shares of Netflix rose at the begining of Monday buying and selling after the organization stated it might ditch its intend to separate its DVD-by-mail from the streaming service by creating Qwikster.com for DVD rental fees.our editor recommendsGoogle, Dish Made Greatest Hulu Bids in First Round (Report)Hulu Bids Likely to Range From $500 Million and $2 Billion PHOTOS: Netflix's 10 Most Leased Movies ever By 9:50am ET, Netflix's stock was up 6.8% at $125.13, passing on a market price of $6.57 billion. Lazard Capital Marketplaces analyst Barton Crockett known as this news "the ideal choice by Netflix," maintaining his "neutral" rating around the stock. STORY: Netflix Yanks Intend to Separate DVD-By-Mail From Streaming Service Janney Montgomery Scott analyst Tony Wible stated this news confirmed that "these men are desperate and they'll attempt to accelerate the positives to reverse recent momentum and rebuild optimism." PHOTOS: Movie Report Card: 10 Greatest Flops of 2011 (To Date) Prior to the reversal from Netflix, together with a mea culpa from Boss Reed Hastings inside a blog publish, Wible had on early Monday upgraded his opinion on Netflix's stock from "sell" to "neutral," while keeping his fair value estimate of $102 per share. Wedbush Investments analyst Michael Pachter known as Netflix's back-paddling "coming back to sanity" adding the intend to separate the streaming and DVD rental companies "made no enterprise sense whatsoever, unless of course to put the organization for any purchase," particularly a purchase from the streaming business to Amazon . com.com. "The reversal informs me that Amazon . com isn't purchasing Netflix's streaming business and informs me that Reed's madness was temporary," Pachter stated. "If Netflix will remain independent, the split-up made no sense whatsoever, and also the backtracking was essential to restore and repair customer relations." Last Man Standing: TV Review

It's too bad Andy Rooney didn't announce his retirement early enough so he could do voice-over work on ABC's Last Man Standing. He'd be perfect, what with his whiney diatribes against modernity and how the world has worsened since the good old days.our editor recommendsABC to Launch Tuesday Comedy Block with Tim Allen's 'Last Man Standing'Tim Allen Downsized for ABC's 'Last Man Standing''Home Improvement' to 'Last Man Standing': Tim Allen Says Men Are Still Being Backed Into a Corner PHOTOS: Fall TV Death Pool: Which New Show Will Be Axed? That is exactly the stance -- albeit far more man-centric -- of Last Man Standing, starring Tim Allen in a return to television after 12 years. He plays Mike Baxter, manly-man adventurer for a supply company called the Outdoor Man. Mike's wife, Vanessa (Nancy Travis), gets him. He's old-school. A complainer. He even starts one sentence, "You know what's wrong with the world ..." Mike also has three daughters living at home, so he's especially worked up about how men aren't men anymore. PHOTOS: Fall TV's 12 Most Anticipated Shows In the middle of the pilot, Allen delivers this treatise (into a computer -- he's helping bring the store into the modern era, and it allows the writers to have Allen spew annoyed dialogues): "What happened to men? We used to build cities just so we could burn them down." On and on it goes. Arriving at the store, Mike says to his male co-workers: "Hey guys, great to be back in the sanctuary. No hair dryers. No tears. No citrus body wash. It smells like balls in here." PHOTOS: Fall TV Preview: The New Shows Yep, that's what you're going to get on Last Man. Allen spends his time ranting about people who can't change their tires (including one of his spoiled daughters), guys who go to tanning salons ("That actually hurts to hear," he says) and other such offenses to masculinity. When he drops off his oldest daughter's son at day care, he's met by, well, stereotypes. One worker invites him in: "Ruby's two dads are here, and they're making muffins -- flax and pumpkin." Allen: "Please tell me that's not their names." You have to wonder when this line of jokes will run out, much less get funny. But Allen is a perfect fit for a multicamera sitcom, and despite the predictability of the jokes, he sells them well. As bad as Last Man is, it would be a trillion times worse without him. Of course, the series is likely to be a hit. Allen is a likable, proven draw. ABC is a family-inclined network, and the show is on at 8 p.m., when all kinds of gruel can be shoveled down the throats of Americans. Maybe this is the easy familiarity people are looking for in the big tent of network television. ABC Tim Allen Fall TV Preview

TV series, has now had both of her shows picked up for a full season -- her NBC sitcom "Whitney" received the greenlight Tuesday. Matthew Moy, Jonathan Kite and Garrett Morris co-star in "Girls." The pickup cements CBS' Monday night lineup, which wraps with "Mike & Molly" at 9:30 p.m. and "Hawaii Five-0" at 10. CBS' other new comedy for the fall, Thursday's "How To Be a Gentleman," is less secure after dropping roughly 40% of the audience from its "The Big Bang Theory" lead-in when it premiered Sept. 29. CBS has pushed back the start date of veteran "Rules of Engagement," which has been slated for Saturdays, to Oct. 15. The comedy is a potential replacement for "Gentleman" on Thursdays if the latter continues to shed viewers. Contact Jon Weisman at jon.weisman@variety.com
